On 31st May 2021, Iraq has become the 168th signatory to the New York Convention, having previously announced its decision to accede in 2018. Previously, foreign arbitral awards were only enforceable in Iraq if they were issued in a signatory state to the Riyadh-Arab Agreement for Judicial Co-operation 1983, or if they were issued in a country with a specific treaty on judicial cooperation with Iraq, such as Egypt.
The accession to the New York Convention forms part of Iraq's ongoing plans for economic recovery and shows the Iraqi government’s commitment to strengthen the country’s dispute resolution system.
